Here
is a true story, one from my own personal experiences in why I
believe in getting a truly qualified professional photographer.
It was back in 1990 when I was getting married. I was not in the
business of photography then, but I was strictly a Management
Analyst for the Defense Logistics Agency. My wife, Mary, and I
had set our date to get married, and all of the pieces were
falling in place. We had decided on the church and gotten
marriage counseling from the pastor. We had selected where the
reception would be and who would be doing the catering. We even
hired a limo service.
We thought that we had covered all
the important events in our wedding...
But,
nowhere in our budget did we plan for photography. Of course, we
wanted nice wedding pictures. Thinking back now, I do not think
we knew of too many people who actually had wedding pictures.
Certainly, they did not have nice pictures that they were proud to
show off.
My
wife did have a bridal portrait done of herself that we still have
today. We really did not even talk to a professional photographer
about photographing our event. We talked to people who told us
how expensive a photographer could be. We even got hold of
someone’s price list. That price list proved to us that it was
expensive, and we could better spend that money somewhere else.
Lesson Learned...It is
better to spend just a little bit more to get the things you
really want and deserve.
My
family told us of a friend who had an interest in photography and
he would only charge us a little bit to photograph our wedding. I
also knew of a cousin who also had an interest in photograph, and
he said he would do it if we reimbursed him for film and
development. You knew which one we went for!
I
thank my cousin, if it was not for him, we would not have any
memories in print from our special day. He was a God send for
us. But, “hind sight being twenty twenty “We would have done
things a whole lot different.
I
know my cousin did the very best job that he could with the
equipment that he had. But, even to us, the couple who did not
want to spend a lot (any really!) of money on photography, we were
really disappointed with the results. You ever heard of the
saying, “you get what you pay for!” Believe me there is a lot to
that cliché.
Our bad experiences has
actually turned into something really good because...
The
posed shots, that me and my wife work so hard on perfecting in our
own business today, were a mere matter of everyone coming together
as close as they could , and smiling! No symmetry to the posing.
Some of the pictures even had us all looking in the same
direction. The good poses were often overshadowed by the
on-camera flash, not generating enough light to cover the whole
group, and the pictures came out dark and unflattering.
No
one told us we would want reception pictures, so we did not have
any taken. Not of the two of us anyways. So, the pictures that
we have are displayed in our album because they are records that
we actually got married. When we did venture to show them to
our friends, it did not really give us a sense of pride like the
portraits that we now produce for our own clients.
If we
could do things differently (and we know that we can not), because
wedding photography, is a one shot thing. For the most part, you
do not get remakes, or "do over", and what you end up with will
have to last a lifetime. But, if we could rewind the hands of
time and do things differently, we would have budgeted for the
right professional photographer. We would not have put our
memories in the hands of just anyone hoping for the best.
My
advice to brides is to have a great time at your wedding...Enjoy
every moment.
Life is too short not to. But, at the same time, life is such a
wonderful gift. And the memories we keep of these moments
with our family will last forever.
